This is Phantasy Star Gaiden, a rare Japan-exclusive RPG for the Sega Game Gear that came out in 1992. Getting started: When you power on the game, you'll be greeted by a title screen in Japanese. Press Enter to start. The first thing you'll see is the menu in Japanese - the top option is usually 'New Game', the second might be 'Continue' (though saving requires a password system). Select New Game and you'll be thrown into the opening scene.
Your goal is to explore the world, talk to NPCs, and follow the story, which is all in text. The core loop is straightforward: walk around towns to gather hints, then head into dungeons to fight monsters. Use the D-Pad to move, press X to confirm selections in menus, and press S to cancel or run. In battle, you'll pick commands from a menu - the first option is usually Attack, second is Magic, third is Item, fourth is Defend or Flee.
Because everything is in Japanese, you'll need to memorize menu positions or use a translation guide. Save your progress using the password system - the game will give you a long password at certain points. Write it down carefully. This is not a game you can breeze through without some patience, but the core RPG mechanics are universal enough to figure out with trial and error.
