Out Run (Japan)
Out Run (Japan) on GG
Out Run on the Sega Game Gear is a portable adaptation of Sega's legendary 1986 arcade racing game. Released exclusively in Japan for the handheld, this version brings the iconic driving experience to a smaller screen while trying to capture the spirit of the original. At its core it is a racing game where you control a Ferrari Testarossa-inspired sports car, racing against the clock through scenic routes with a selectable soundtrack by Hiroshi Kawaguchi.
How to Play Out Run (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you start Out Run on the Game Gear, you first see a title screen with Japanese text. Press Start to begin. You will then choose a stage branching path at the first fork; the game presents two routes on the right side of the road. Use the D-Pad left or right to select your destination, then press the A button (X key) to confirm. The car automatically moves forward and you steer with the D-Pad left/right to avoid oncoming traffic and stay on the road.
The core loop is simple: reach the next checkpoint before the timer runs out. The timer starts at a certain count and ticks down as you drive. Passing through checkpoint gates adds time and brings you closer to the final destination. You can also choose a different route at each fork, which changes the scenery and music track. The game is all about quick reflexes and knowing when to dodge, brake, or accelerate.
Menus are entirely in Japanese, but the primary selection is straightforward: the title screen has options for starting the game and maybe a sound test. The directional pad selects, and the A button confirms. If you get a game over, you will see a continue screen with a countdown - press Start quickly to continue. The controls are responsive but the Game Gear's smaller screen makes spotting upcoming obstacles a little tricky, so keep your eyes ahead.
