Legend of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is a 2D platformer that landed on the Sega Game Gear in 1995. It was developed by Aspect, the studio behind many other Game Gear and Master System titles, and published by Sega. The game also saw a Master System release in Brazil near the end of 1998, but the version discussed here is the USA/Europe Game Gear cartridge. This was part of Sega's push to bring Disney characters to their handheld, following earlier Mickey games on the platform.

Getting Started

Legend of Illusion is a straightforward side-scrolling platformer. You control Mickey as he runs, jumps, and defeats enemies by bouncing on them or using a simple attack. The goal is to reach the end of each level, collecting gems and avoiding hazards along the way. The game starts with an introductory screen offering a choice between "New Game" and "Continue" (if you have a password).

The core loop involves moving from left to right through colorful stages themed around locations like a forest or a castle. You will need to time your jumps carefully over pits and onto moving platforms. Some levels have minor puzzle elements, such as pushing blocks or triggering switches to open paths. Keep an eye out for hidden 1-ups and extra lives.

New players should start by experimenting with the controls on the first stage to get a feel for Mickey's jump arc and attack range. The game is not overly punishing, but later levels require precision. Use the password system (shown after each boss) to resume progress later. There is no save battery, so write down those passwords.
