Garfield gets trapped inside the TV and you're tasked with helping him get out! That's the setup for this Sega Game Gear platformer, originally released in 1995. Published and developed by Sega, it's part of a small wave of Garfield games that hit Sega's handheld during the mid-90s. The game was also released on the Sega Genesis and Master System, but the Game Gear version has its own scaled-down levels and sprite work that fits the smaller screen. The player controls Garfield across side-scrolling stages, each themed after a different TV channel or show. You jump on platforms, avoid hazards like electric sparks and falling objects, and collect items such as lasagna to regain health. Each level ends with a boss fight, usually against a character from whatever show Garfield has stumbled into. The controls are typical for the era - jump with one button, run with another - and the game keeps a steady pace with checkpoints and continues. Is it a hidden gem? Not exactly, but it's a solid, if simple, platformer that captures the look and feel of the comic strip. The animation is smooth for the Game Gear, and the concept of traveling through TV shows gives each stage a distinct flavor. For fans of Garfield or retro handhelds, it's worth a quick playthrough. Just don't expect a masterpiece - it's a fun, forgettable diversion that does exactly what it says on the cartridge.

How to play Garfield - Caught in the Act online

When the game boots up, you'll see a title screen. Press Enter (Start) to proceed to the main menu. Use Arrow Keys to highlight an option and X to confirm. You can start a new game, and sometimes there's a level select if you have a password. The core objective is simple: guide Garfield through each TV-themed level from left to right, avoiding enemies and traps, and reach the exit sign at the end.

The game is a straightforward side-scrolling platformer. You'll jump between platforms, collect floating food items to replenish health, and occasionally hit blocks from below to reveal items. Each level has a mid-point where you'll see a checkpoint - if you die, you return there instead of the start. At the end of each stage, you face a boss that requires pattern recognition and timing. Don't rush; some traps are instant kills. Use the run button (S) to move faster when you have clear ground, but be careful not to slide off edges.

There is no pause button mapped by default, but you can press Enter to pause the emulation itself if needed. The game doesn't have in-game saves, but it uses a password system after completing certain stages. Write down the password shown on screen after a boss fight so you can continue later. If you need to reset, use the emulator's restart option (usually F1 or similar). The difficulty ramps up a bit in later stages, but continues are generous - you can restart the level from the beginning as many times as you need.
