Crash Bandicoot 3 - Buttobi! Sekai Isshuu (Japan)
Crash Bandicoot 3 - Buttobi! Sekai Isshuu (Japan): PSX Platformer
Crash Bandicoot 3 - Buttobi! Sekai Isshuu is the Japanese version of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, released for the PlayStation in 1998. Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, it is the third mainline entry in the classic platformer series on the original PlayStation. The subtitle translates to "Take Off! World Tour," reflecting the globe-trotting theme where Crash collects power crystals across different time periods. This version includes all the same levels and mechanics as the Western release, with menus and text fully localized into Japanese.
The core gameplay follows Crash as he runs, jumps, spins, and slides through 3D and 2.5D levels set in ancient Egypt, medieval England, futuristic cities, and other eras. The player breaks wooden crates for Wumpa fruit and bonus items, collects relics by completing time trials, and defeats enemies with a spin attack or body slam. Each hub world presents a warp room with several stages, and beating bosses unlocks further areas. The game also includes vehicle levels like jet-ski riding and piloting an airplane, adding variety to the standard platforming.
Even if you have played the Western version, this Japanese release offers a unique flavor with its altered subtitles and regional audio cues. It remains one of the most polished and varied entries on the PlayStation, known for tight controls and creative level design. For retro gamers interested in how regional releases differed in the late 90s, it is a neat companion piece that holds up well on its own. The time trial mode in particular still attracts speedrunners today, and the Japanese packaging and manual are lovely extras for collectors.
How to Play Crash Bandicoot 3 - Buttobi! Sekai Isshuu (Japan) Online
To start the game, press Enter on the title screen. The main menu is fully in Japanese, but the layout is identical to the Western version: the top option starts a new game, the middle option continues, and the bottom opens options. Select a save file (empty slots are available) and confirm with X to enter the first warp room.
Each warp room contains a ring of levels. Walk up to a stage portal and press X to select it. Your goal is to collect a crystal at the end of each level, which unlocks the next set. Optional gems require breaking all crates in a stage or finding hidden areas. Use the D-Pad to move Crash, X to jump, S to spin attack or run faster (press S while moving). Tap A to slide or X near ropes to climb. Time trial gates appear after you beat a level at least once.
The game auto-saves after completing a level or collecting a relic. If you get stuck, remember that most destructible crates contain Wumpa fruit which gives extra lives at 100 fruits and heals one hit point. Checkpoint crates (usually marked with an exclamation mark) save your progress within a level if you die. Enjoy the ride - the Japanese version plays exactly like the original Warped but with localised text and voiceovers.
