Buster Brothers (USA)
Buster Brothers (USA) - Puzzle Classic
Buster Brothers landed on the original Game Boy in 1991, a straightforward puzzle-platformer built around simple arcade-style action. The same year had plenty of portables trying to replicate quarter-muncher experiences, and this one fits right into that tradition. It was released in North America by an unknown publisher, and it runs on the monochrome handheld that defined early portable gaming.
Players control a character who moves across single-screen levels and must defeat all enemies to advance. The core action involves jumping on foes to trap them inside bubbles, then popping those bubbles before they float away. Timing and positioning are crucial, because enemies move faster as the round progresses. The game supports two players simultaneously via link cable, letting friends team up or compete for high scores.
Despite its simplicity, Buster Brothers offers a solid dose of handheld arcade fun that feels right at home on the Game Boy. The limited color palette fits the chunky sprite work, and the challenge ramps up steadily through the levels. It's a niche title compared to big-name releases like Super Mario Land, but if you enjoyed early Bubble Bobble or Puzzle Bobble, this one scratches a similar itch without overstaying its welcome.
How to Play Buster Brothers (USA) Online
When you fire up Buster Brothers, you pick either one-player or two-player from the title screen. Use the D-Pad to highlight your choice and press X to confirm. The game drops you onto a single-screen level filled with crawling enemies. Your goal is to stomp them from above - hitting them from the side or below does nothing and makes you take damage.
Each enemy you stomp turns into a bubble that drifts upward. You must touch the bubble to pop it before it reaches the top of the screen, because unpopped bubbles turn back into enemies after a few seconds. Clear every enemy on the stage to advance. Along the way you can grab power‑ups that appear after popping multiple bubbles in a row, such as speed boosts or a star that lets you jump on enemies without turning them into bubbles.
There's a brief delay between levels where you can ready yourself, but the pacing stays brisk. If you take a hit, you lose a life and respawn immediately. Running out of lives sends you back to the beginning of the current stage set. The two‑player mode works over the link cable and lets both players fight on the same screen, which adds friendly chaos.
