Bomb Jack arrived on the Game Boy in Europe during the early 90s, bringing a popular arcade formula to Nintendo's handheld. Originally an arcade hit from Tehkan (later Tecmo) in 1984, this portable version stays faithful to the coin-op. It's a straightforward arcade platformer where you guide a flying superhero through single-screen stages, grabbing bombs while dodging enemies. The Game Boy port retains the core loop and colorful visuals, though the monochrome screen obviously tones things down.

The goal in each round is to collect all bombs scattered around the level. Bomb Jack can float and drift in the air by holding the jump button, which is his main tool for navigating platforms and avoiding foes. Enemies patrol the screen and can be stunned temporarily by collecting certain power-up bombs. Grabbing bombs in sequence or all of them triggers a bonus multiplier. The game moves fast and death comes quickly if you're careless, pushing you to learn enemy patterns and plan your floating route.

Bomb Jack is a solid arcade conversion that fits the Game Boy library nicely, especially if you enjoy quick pick-up-and-play action. It lacks the depth of longer platformers but makes up for it with tight controls and addictive scoring loops. Compared to other handheld arcade ports of the era, it holds up well - simple, responsive, and challenging without being unfair.
