Classic Bubble Bobble (Europe)
Classic Bubble Bobble (Europe) Overview
Classic Bubble Bobble on Game Boy Color is a remake of the original arcade hit from Taito, brought to Nintendo's handheld in Europe. It's a platformer at heart, where you control a cute dinosaur navigating vertically-scrolling single-screen stages. While the exact publisher and developer behind this port aren't widely documented, the game retains the core formula that made the 1986 original so addictive.
You move through each room, blowing bubbles that can trap wandering enemies. Once an enemy is inside a bubble, you pop it by running into it or jumping on it, sending the enemy to defeat. The goal is to clear all enemies from the stage to advance. Along the way, you'll collect fruit and power-ups that drop from popped bubbles, affecting score or providing temporary abilities. The game keeps the two-player cooperative option, allowing a friend to join for simultaneous action.
Today, Classic Bubble Bobble stands as a faithful adaptation of a beloved arcade classic on a portable system. It's not a revolutionary title, but it offers that straightforward, satisfying loop of trapping and popping that fans of the series expect. If you enjoy retro platformers with simple rules and a bit of strategic timing, this GBC release delivers without unnecessary frills.
How to Play Classic Bubble Bobble (Europe) Online
Getting Started
You take control of Bub, a small dinosaur roaming single-screen stages filled with fruit and enemies. Your only weapon is a stream of bubbles. Blow bubbles (hold B and release) to trap any enemy that wanders into them. Once an enemy is inside a bubble, jump into it or run into it to pop it, defeating the enemy. Clear every enemy on the screen to make a door appear that takes you to the next level.
The core loop is simple: move around the stage, trap enemies, pop them, and avoid touching any enemy directly or you lose a life. Collected fruit and special items drop from popped bubbles and can increase your score or grant temporary power-ups like speed boosts. The game does not include a save feature; progress is lost once you turn off the console, relying on passwords or simply restarting from the beginning each time.
If you have a second player, you can connect via link cable for cooperative play. Both players work together to clear stages, but watch out - you can accidentally trap your partner in a bubble too.
