Scrapyard Dog (USA, Europe)

Scrapyard Dog is a scrolling platformer that first appeared on the Atari 7800 in 1990 before being ported to the Atari Lynx in 1991. Atari Corporation published both versions. The Lynx port kept the same side-scrolling action but adapted it for the handheld's smaller screen and controls. It's a straightforward jump-and-run game typical of the late eight-bit era.

You control a dog navigating junkyard-themed levels filled with enemies, pits, and obstacles. The core loop involves running and jumping across platforms, collecting items like bones or keys, and reaching the exit. The Lynx version uses a color palette and features enemy types like rats and birds. Attacks are limited to a brief kick or punch, so timing jumps is often safer than fighting.

This title is a decent example of early handheld platforming. It's not the deepest game on the Lynx, but it captures the feel of home console platformers in a portable form.
