Road Riot 4WD

Road Riot 4WD is an arcade racing game originally developed by Atari Games and released in arcades in 1991. This particular version is an Atari Lynx prototype that was never officially released a rare piece of gaming history for collectors and enthusiasts. The Lynx port was in development alongside a Sega Genesis version, but neither made it to store shelves. The game is a direct port of the arcade original, bringing weapon-based off-road racing to the handheld. Players take control of dune buggies equipped with offensive weapons and compete in races set across global tracks. The core gameplay involves steering and accelerating while using pickups like machine guns and missiles to knock opponents out of the race. It follows the classic arcade racing formula: qualify for each race by finishing in the top positions, then advance to the next track. The Lynx prototype retains the same perspective and basic mechanics as the arcade version, adapted for the handheld's controls. For retro gaming fans, this prototype offers a fascinating look at what could have been a solid Lynx port. It represents a period when Atari was trying to bring arcade experiences to its handheld, though the project was ultimately shelved. While it is a simple and niche title even by Lynx standards its existence makes it a curiosity for those interested in unreleased games and the era's portable racing library.
