Fight for Life hit the Atari Jaguar in 1996 as the final game developed and published by Atari Corporation themselves before they dropped support for the platform. The game was built around a purgatory setting called the Specter Zone, where eight deceased fighters compete in a tournament held by a shapeshifting being known as the Gatekeeper, who promises the winner a second chance at life.
You select one of the eight dead fighters, each presumably with their own backstory and moves, then fight through a series of matches against AI opponents or a second player. The core loop is standard for the genre: you have health bars, basic attacks like punches and kicks, and special moves tied to button combinations or directional inputs. Getting Started
When you boot up Fight for Life, you will be taken to a title screen where you press Start to proceed. The main menu offers options like fight, versus, practice, and options. Use the D-pad to highlight and the A button (X key) to confirm. Choose fight for a single-player tournament mode where you pick your character and battle through eight opponents, culminating in the Gatekeeper boss.
During a match, basic attacks are mapped to the B button (S key) for punches and kicks, and you can combine directions with buttons for special moves. Each character has a unique move list, but without a manual you may need to experiment with quarter-circle motions and button presses. The goal is to reduce the opponent's health bar to zero within the time limit. You can also use the L and R shoulder buttons (Q and E) for throw or other actions, depending on the character.
If you want to play with a friend, select versus from the menu for two-player matches. The practice mode is useful for learning moves without pressure. Because this is a late Jaguar title, the controls can feel slightly clunky by modern standards, but they are functional once you get used to the keyboard mapping.
