Super Skateboardin'

Super Skateboardin' dropped on the Atari 7800 back in 1988, a time when skateboarding culture was huge thanks to games like Skate or Die! on other platforms. This is an official release from Atari Corporation, bringing arcade-style skating action to their 7800 console. It's a straightforward side-scrolling sports game where you control a skater trying to pull off tricks and avoid hazards while racing against the clock. The gameplay is simple: you ride left to right through several stages, each filled with obstacles like oil slicks, road barriers, and ramps. The A button jumps, and the B button lets you perform tricks - kickflips, ollies, and the like - to earn points. Timing your jumps over gaps and onto rails is key, but the real challenge is avoiding pedestrians and cars that pop up. You have a limited number of lives, and crashing into stuff slows you down or ends your run. It's not deep, but it captures the pick-up-and-play vibe of early skateboarding games. Today, Super Skateboardin' is a decent example of how the 7800 handled sports titles. It's not as polished as the NES or C64 alternatives, but the controls are responsive and the pixel art has that distinct Atari charm. If you're into retro skateboarding games or curious about the 7800 library, it's worth a few runs. Just don't expect the depth of later Tony Hawk games - this is pure 8-bit arcade action.
