How to play Rampart online
Getting Started
When you start the prototype, you will likely be dropped into a simple menu or directly into the game. The core loop is straightforward: first, place wall segments around your castles during a brief building phase. Use the D-pad to move a cursor and press the confirm button (X key) to lay down walls. You have a limited time to build before enemies attack.
Once combat begins, the view switches to a cannon-aiming screen. Move your crosshair over enemy ships or troops and press the fire button (S key) to shoot. Explosions can also damage nearby walls, so be careful. After each wave, you return to building. The goal is to survive as many waves as possible by keeping your castles fortified.
Because this is an unfinished prototype, you may encounter missing graphics or odd behavior. Experiment with the controls to discover what each button does. If the game starts without a title screen, simply press Start (Enter) to begin. There is no saving, so treat it as a quick arcade-like session.

Rampart FAQ
Is Rampart considered easy to pick up or challenging?
The core gameplay is easy to understand - you build walls and shoot cannons - but the alternating phases require quick planning and fast reflexes. The challenge ramps up quickly as enemy waves grow more aggressive, making it harder to protect your territory. Even in this prototype state, the difficulty feels balanced for arcade audiences.
Is there anything iconic or memorable about Rampart?
The alternating building and combat phases were unusual for an arcade game in 1990. The wall-building mechanic, where you place tetromino-like pieces, was also distinctive. Rampart is often remembered as a creative mashup of strategy and action, though it never achieved the same fame as other Atari Games titles like Gauntlet or Marble Madness.
Is Rampart exclusive to ATARI 7800 or did it appear on other systems?
The original arcade game appeared on many systems: NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, and several home computers. The Atari 7800 version shown here is an unreleased prototype, so it never officially appeared on that platform. If you want a finished version, the NES or SNES ports are more polished.
