Crack'ed on A7800

Crack'ed (subtitled 'An Egg-Citing Adventure') is a target shooting game that landed on the Atari 7800 in 1988. Originally developed by Robert Craig for the Atari ST, this port was published by Atari Corporation. It's an official release, not a hack or homebrew, and it fits squarely into the shooting gallery genre of the late 80s. In Crack'ed, you control a crosshair on screen with the standard Atari 7800 joystick. The goal is straightforward: protect a nest of bird eggs by shooting predators that creep in from the sides. Snakes, rats, and other critters try to grab the eggs, and you must blast them before they succeed. There's no light gun support here, so it plays more like a mouse-controlled shooter using the D-pad. Each wave throws more enemies at you, testing your aim and reaction time. For a 7800 library that's light on shooting gallery games, Crack'ed is a neat curiosity. It's simple and repetitive, but the premise is charming and the controller-based aiming gives it a different feel from light gun games of the era. If you enjoy old-school target practice with a quirky theme, it's worth a few rounds. Just don't expect depth or variety.

How to play Crack'ed online

Start by pressing Enter to begin the game. A crosshair appears on screen; you control its position with the D-pad (Arrow Keys). Use the A button (X key) to fire at predators. The core loop is simple: enemies come from both sides of the screen heading for the eggs at the bottom. Shoot them before they reach the nest. If an egg is taken, you lose it. You have a limited number of misses or lives; the game ends when all eggs are gone. Pay attention to enemy patterns. Some move quickly, others zigzag. There's no light gun support, so you must rely on precise D-pad aiming. The game ramps up difficulty as more predators appear simultaneously. Practice leading your shots and memorizing spawn points to survive longer. That's all there is to it.

Crack'ed FAQ

Is there anything iconic or memorable about Crack'ed?

Crack'ed is one of the few Atari 7800 games that uses a crosshair controlled entirely by the standard joystick, rather than a light gun. Its egg-protection premise and the subtitle 'An Egg-Citing Adventure' make it stand out among simple shooters. It's a rare title that demonstrates the platform's range beyond arcade ports and platformers.

Which regions was Crack'ed released in?

The Atari 7800 version of Crack'ed was released exclusively in the USA. The original Atari ST version had a wider distribution, but the 7800 port is region-locked to North America.

Who developed Crack'ed?

Robert Craig developed the original Atari ST version of Crack'ed. The Atari 7800 port was published by Atari Corporation, though the specific porter for that version is not widely documented.
