Basketbrawl (USA)
What is Basketbrawl (USA)?
Basketbrawl is a sports game that landed on the Atari 7800 in 1990, a late-era title for the system. It blends basketball with allowed fighting, earning its portmanteau name. The game was later ported to the Atari Lynx in 1992. While the developer isn't widely documented, it draws clear inspiration from Midway's 1989 arcade game Arch Rivals, which carried the tagline 'A basket brawl!' Basketbrawl stands as one of the few Atari 7800 titles to combine contact sports with brawling mechanics.
How to Play Basketbrawl (USA) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Basketbrawl, you'll likely see a title screen. Press Start (Enter) to begin a game. The core loop is standard basketball but with an aggressive twist: you can punch and shove opponents to steal the ball or disrupt plays. The goal is to outscore the opposing team by shooting the ball into their basket, but you're encouraged to use physical force to gain an advantage.
Movement uses the arrow keys, and you'll need to switch between offense and defense fluidly. On offense, dribble toward the basket while avoiding or attacking defenders. On defense, use your B button (S) to run and attempt to knock the ball loose. Jumping (X) helps block shots or grab rebounds. The game moves quickly and there is no pause for strategic planning; react on the fly.
A new player should remember that this isn't a pure simulation - expect chaotic action where fouling is part of the design. Learn the timing of your attacks and practice shooting from different positions. If you lose a match, simply restart by pressing Start again. There are no deep menus or options, just pick up and play basketball with brawling allowed.
