Canyon Bomber (prototype) [No sound]
About Canyon Bomber (prototype) [No sound]
This is a prototype version of Canyon Bomber, an early arcade action game released by Atari in 1977. It was programmed by Wendi Allen, who had previously worked on Super Bug. The game originally appeared in arcades and was later ported to the Atari 2600. This particular build is labeled as a prototype and notably lacks sound, giving a glimpse into its development process.
The gameplay is straightforward: you control a small airplane or blimp flying over a canyon, dropping bombs onto rock formations and targets below. Each bomb destroys parts of the terrain, and the goal is to clear as much as possible before running out of bombs. Points are awarded for each piece destroyed. The game alternates between two players in a competitive fashion, with each player trying to outscore the other. The controls are simple: movement and bomb release.
For players interested in early arcade history, this prototype offers a raw look at one of Atari's lesser-known titles. It's a simple game by modern standards, but its charm lies in its minimalism and the quick-paced scoring. Compared to other 1977 arcade games, Canyon Bomber fits right in with the era's focus on single-screen action and straightforward objectives. If you're a collector of Atari prototypes or curious about the evolution of arcade design, this is worth a few rounds.
