Cadash (World, prototype)
Getting to Know Cadash (World, prototype)
Cadash (World, prototype) is an early build of Taito's 1991 arcade action-RPG platformer. The final game was officially released in arcades, then ported to TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Genesis, but this prototype offers a glimpse into its development. As a prototype, it may contain differences in levels, enemy placement, or balance compared to the retail version. Taito, known for classics like Bubble Bobble and Darius, developed and originally published the game, blending side-scrolling action with light RPG mechanics.
You control one of four character classes - fighter, mage, priestess, or ninja - as you explore a fantasy world. The core loop involves running and jumping across platforms while fighting monsters with physical attacks or magic. Defeated enemies grant experience points, which raise your level and improve your stats. You also collect gold to buy weapons, armor, and items from shops between stages. The goal is to traverse interconnected areas, battle bosses, and ultimately rescue a kidnapped princess. The prototype likely retains this basic structure, though specific monster behaviors or item placements may vary.
What makes this prototype interesting for retro fans is the chance to see how a well-known arcade title evolved before its final release. It fits into Taito's library as a rare hybrid: a platformer that demands reflexes but also rewards grinding for levels and gear. Compared to other action-RPGs of the era like Wonder Boy or Rygar, Cadash leans more heavily into character progression and class choice. The prototype may feel slightly rough around the edges, but that's part of its charm for collectors and historians looking to study the development process.
How to Play Cadash (World, prototype) Online
Getting Started
When you start the prototype, you'll likely see a character select screen. Use the D-Pad (Arrow Keys) to choose between the four classes: Fighter (strong melee), Mage (magic attacks), Priestess (balanced magic and healing), or Ninja (fast but fragile). Press X to confirm your choice, then press Enter to begin the game. The story assumes you're a hero setting out to rescue a princess from an evil wizard.
Core gameplay is side-scrolling platforming with combat. Move with Arrow Keys, jump with X, and attack with S (or use magic if you're a caster class). Enemies appear on screen, and you defeat them by hitting them with your weapon or spells. Defeated enemies drop gold and experience orbs. Gold is used in shops (you'll see a shop sign on some levels) to buy potions, weapons, and armor. Experience levels up your character automatically, raising hit points and attack power.
A key mechanic is managing your health and magic. You can find food items to restore HP, and magic users need to collect MP-restoring items. The prototype may have different item locations or balance, so explore thoroughly. Death sends you back to the beginning of the current area, but you keep your level and equipment. The goal is to reach the final boss in the deepest dungeon and rescue the princess. Since this is a prototype, expect occasional glitches or unfinished elements - part of the fun is discovering what changed before the final release.
