Aurail (set 2, World, FD1089B 317-0168) - Shooter Classic
Aurail is a scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game released by Sega in 1990. It was developed by Westone, the studio best known for the Wonder Boy series. The game ran on Sega's System 16 hardware and saw a worldwide release, with this particular set being the World revision using the FD1089B security chip. It's a solid example of late-era arcade shooters that leaned into sci-fi mecha themes rather than the more common spacecraft or military settings.
In Aurail, you pilot a tank-like mecha through side-scrolling levels while blasting waves of enemy robots and aircraft. The core gameplay revolves around collecting power-ups that increase your shield strength and activate a remote attack drone that hovers nearby and can fire independently. You can launch the drone forward to clear paths or recall it for defensive positioning. The game also mixes things up with tunnel stages that shift to a first-person perspective, where you dodge obstacles and shoot targets directly ahead. Each stage ends with a boss encounter that demands pattern recognition and quick reflexes.
Aurail is worth revisiting today because it stands as a quirky alternative to more dominant shooters of its era. The drone mechanic adds a strategic layer not found in contemporaries like R-Type or Gradius, and the first-person tunnel segments provide a welcome change of pace. It is not a legendary title, but it is a well-made, functional shooter that shows Westone experimenting beyond their adventure game roots. Emulation preserves a version that arcade purists can appreciate without the wear of old hardware.
How to Play Aurail (set 2, World, FD1089B 317-0168) Online
To begin playing Aurail, press the Start key (Enter) on the title screen. You will see an options screen where you can adjust difficulty and continue settings, but the default is fine for a first try. The game starts you at the first stage immediately. Use the Arrow Keys to move your mecha around the screen. Press the B key (S) to shoot your main weapon and the A key (X) to deploy or recall your remote attack drone. The drone follows your movements and fires automatically, but you can send it straight ahead by pressing A while it is nearby. Collect the colored power-up icons that appear from destroyed enemies to increase your shield meter or upgrade the drone. When the screen changes to a first-person tunnel view, move your crosshair with the Arrow Keys and shoot obstacles and enemies that appear straight ahead. Survive until the boss at the end of each stage, learning their attack patterns to find openings. If you get hit, you lose part of your shield; at zero shield your mecha explodes and you lose a life. The game continues as long as you have lives remaining, and you can insert more credits with the Select key (V) if needed.
