Getting to Know 1942 (Revision A, bootleg) [Bootleg]
1942 is a 1984 vertically scrolling shooter originally developed and published by Capcom for arcades, designed by Yoshiki Okamoto. This particular ROM is a bootleg copy of the Revision A build, meaning it's an unauthorized reproduction that may have minor differences from the official release. The game kicked off the 194X series and was later followed by 1943: The Battle of Midway.
You pilot a single-propeller fighter plane over the Pacific theater of World War II, scrolling upward as you dodge enemy fire and shoot down waves of Japanese aircraft. The core loop involves blasting through formations of fighters, avoiding anti-aircraft fire from the ground, and collecting power-ups that improve your shot or give you a secondary weapon. A signature maneuver is the "roll" - pressing the attack button while moving sideways lets you perform a barrel roll that can dodge incoming bullets and enemy collisions.
As a bootleg, this version is mainly interesting for collectors and players curious about how knockoff ROMs handled Capcom's original code. It plays almost identically to the official release, but you might notice graphical quirks or altered timing. If you enjoy classic shooters like Galaga or Tiger Heli, 1942 offers tight arcade action that still feels satisfying today, even if the bootleg status means it's more of a curiosity than a definitive way to play.
How to Play 1942 (Revision A, bootleg) [Bootleg] Online
Getting Started
When you boot the game, press Enter to start. You take control of a small propeller plane that automatically scrolls upward. Your goal is to survive each stage by destroying enemy aircraft and avoiding their bullets and collisions. The game uses a vertical scroll: as your plane moves forward, new waves of enemies appear from the edges.
The core loop is simple: dodge and shoot. Hold the attack button (S) to fire continuously. When you see a power-up icon (usually a red or blue glowing item), fly into it to upgrade your weapon. The roll maneuver is critical - quickly tap left or right while pressing S to execute a barrel roll. This makes you temporarily invincible but also halts your forward movement briefly. Use it to dodge dense enemy fire or to avoid crashing into a plane that's right in front of you.
Each stage ends with a mid-boss or a large formation that must be cleared. You have a limited number of lives; when you lose all, it's game over and you must insert another credit (press V for Select, then Enter) to continue. There are no continues by default - this is the original arcade experience where one quarter equals one attempt. Practice timing your rolls and learning enemy patterns to survive the increasingly difficult waves.
