OutRun (Japan)
What is OutRun (Japan)?
The player sits behind the wheel of a convertible, choosing between multiple branching courses at each stage. The core loop involves accelerating, steering, and shifting gears (if using manual transmission) while dodging traffic and roadside obstacles. A timer ticks down between checkpoints, forcing you to maintain speed. Two music tracks play during the drive, and the goal is simply to reach the finish line before time runs out, exploring different route combinations along the way.
OutRun stands out on the Genesis for its impressive arcade-to-home conversion, retaining the original's smooth pseudo-3D scaling and memorable soundtrack. While the graphics and sound are slightly pared down from the arcade, the core driving feel and split-second course decisions remain intact. It's a quick, satisfying dose of arcade driving that holds up well today, especially for fans of retro cruiser games or anyone curious about Sega's early 16-bit lineup.
How to Play OutRun (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When the game boots, you'll see a Japanese title screen. Press Start to advance through the menus. You can select your transmission type (automatic or manual) and choose one of two music tracks before starting. The game begins with your Ferrari at the starting line on a sunny coastal highway.
The objective is to reach the finish line before your time runs out. Steer left and right to avoid oncoming traffic and roadside barriers. At certain points, the road splits into two forks - your choice determines which stage you play next. Hitting other cars or obstacles slows you down and costs precious seconds. You can also collect bonus points by passing through checkpoints quickly.
If you chose manual transmission, use Z to shift up and S to shift down. Automatic handles shifting for you. The game is straightforward: keep the accelerator pinned, dodge traffic, and pick the fork that looks most appealing. Menus are in Japanese, but the gameplay loop is self-explanatory. With practice you'll learn the best routes and memorise traffic patterns.
