NFL Football '94 (Japan)
NFL Football '94 (Japan): Genesis Sports
NFL Football '94 is the second game in Sega's officially licensed football series, following Sportstalk Football '93 on the SEGA Genesis. Released in Japan as a regional variant, this title dropped the 'Sportstalk' branding for a simpler name. As with its predecessor, it carried endorsements from both the NFL and the NFLPA, giving it access to all 28 teams and over 800 real players from the 1992 season. If you're hunting for authentic early-90s gridiron action on the Genesis, this is one of the few titles from the era that had the license locked in.
How to Play NFL Football '94 (Japan) Online
Getting started: Fire up the game and you'll land on a title screen with Japanese text. Press Start to move to the main menu, which lists options like exhibition, season play, and settings. Since menus are entirely in Japanese, you may need to trial-and-error or look up a translation guide to navigate team selection and play calling. The core loop is typical of early Madden-style football: pick your team, choose offensive and defensive plays from a static list, then execute snaps, passes, and tackles using the D-pad and buttons.
On offense, you control the quarterback after the snap; use the D-pad to move and press S to pass to a receiver (the game automatically selects the target based on your direction and timing). On defense, you control a single player and try to sack the QB or intercept passes. The pace is slower than modern football games, with a focus on reading the field. Keep an eye on the play clock and learn the button for kicking on fourth down. If you get stuck, the game includes a practice mode from the main menu.
