The core loop is typical of early Madden-style football: pick your team, choose offensive and defensive plays from a static list, then execute snaps, passes, and tackles using the D-pad and buttons.

On offense, you control the quarterback after the snap; use the D-pad to move and press S to pass to a receiver (the game automatically selects the target based on your direction and timing). On defense, you control a single player and try to sack the QB or intercept passes. The pace is slower than modern football games, with a focus on reading the field. Keep an eye on the play clock and learn the button for kicking on fourth down. If you get stuck, the game includes a practice mode from the main menu.
