Dune II - The Battle for Arrakis (Europe)
Dune II - The Battle for Arrakis (Europe) on Genesis
Dune II - The Battle for Arrakis is a real-time strategy game released for the SEGA Genesis in 1993, ported from the original MS-DOS version that came out the previous year. It was developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive in Europe. This cart brings the strategic warfare of Frank Herbert's Dune universe to the 16-bit console, letting players control one of three Great Houses vying for control of the desert planet Arrakis.
The player selects a house and begins with a small base, a construction yard, and a few units. The core loop involves ordering harvesters to collect spice, which serves as both currency and a critical resource. You build wind traps for power, refineries to process spice, factories to produce tanks and infantry, and defensive turrets to fortify your position. As the game progresses, you send your army across the map to destroy enemy bases and conquer the planet. The interface uses a simple point-and-click mechanic adapted for the Genesis controller, with buildings placed on concrete slabs and units selected individually or in groups.
Despite its age, Dune II is still worth playing because it essentially defined the real-time strategy genre. Many mechanics that became standard - resource gathering, base construction, tech trees, and rock-paper-scissors unit balance - originated here. The Genesis port runs well and retains the original's strategic depth, though the controls feel sluggish compared to modern RTS games. It remains a historical landmark and a satisfying challenge for retro strategy enthusiasts who can overlook its dated interface.
How to Play Dune II - The Battle for Arrakis (Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you start a new game, you first choose one of the three houses: Atreides (balanced), Harkonnen (aggressive), or Ordos (stealthy). Each has different unit strengths and a unique style. You then pick a skill level and the game begins with a small base centered around a Construction Yard. Your immediate goal is to build a Wind Trap for power, a Refinery to process spice, and send out the Harvester to collect spice from the nearest sand.
The core loop is simple: gather spice to fund your army, construct new buildings to unlock better units, and expand your territory by placing buildings on concrete slabs. Use the D-pad to move the cursor over the map and the A button to select and place items. The B button cancels actions. Keep an eye on your power level; if it drops, production slows and defenses weaken. Build more Wind Traps or Silo extensions to store spice.
New players should focus on building a solid economy before rushing enemies. Place a Light Factory to produce combat units, then build a Radar Outpost to reveal the map. Use the sidebar to queue productions. The enemy AI will attack periodically, so fortify your base with walls and turrets. Once you have a strong force, move out to destroy enemy Construction Yards and Refineries. Victory comes when all rival houses are eliminated. Take it slow and learn the build order; the game rewards patience.
