GG Shinobi, The (Japan)
Inside GG Shinobi, The (Japan)
The GG Shinobi (1991) is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Sega exclusively for the Sega Game Gear in Japan. It takes the core sword-swinging ninja action of the arcade Shinobi series and squeezes it into a portable format. Instead of a direct port, this is a standalone game built from the ground up for Sega's handheld, with unique levels and physics tuned for the small screen.
How to Play GG Shinobi, The (Japan) Online
You begin on the title screen. Press Enter (Start) to move to the character selection menu. The game lets you pick from several ninjas, each with different abilities like throwing shurikens or using a longer sword. Use the Arrow Keys to highlight a portrait and X to confirm. Once selected the first stage starts immediately.
Your goal in each level is to reach the exit door at the end while fighting enemies with sword slashes (S button) and jumping (X) over pits and hazards. Collect health pickups and scroll items to earn points. The game is relatively short but challenging, with a boss at the end of each stage. Since this is the Japanese version, menu text is in Japanese. On the character select screen the portraits are self‑explanatory, and the pause menu (Enter) shows only a few kanji - usually you can just ignore it and keep moving.
