Shadow Squadron ~ Stellar Assault (USA, Europe)
Shadow Squadron ~ Stellar Assault (USA, Europe) on 32X
Shadow Squadron (or Stellar Assault in Europe) is a first-person space combat shooter released for the SEGA 32X add-on in 1995. Published and developed by Sega, it was one of the later titles for the platform and aimed to show off the 32X's polygon-rendering capabilities. The American and European versions are essentially the same game, just with different box art and title variations.
You pilot a starfighter through a series of missions, each set in vast 3D environments viewed from inside the cockpit. The core gameplay revolves around locking onto enemy fighters, missiles, and capital ships using a heads-up display, then blasting them with your primary cannons and secondary weapons. You manage your speed and shield energy, dodge incoming fire, and use radar to track targets. The missions are spread across several planets and space stations, with objectives like destroying all enemies, escorting allies, or surviving waves of foes.
For a 32X title, Shadow Squadron delivers a smooth 30 frames-per-second experience that feels closer to early polygon shooters like Star Fox than to older wireframe games. The controls take some getting used to, especially the need to constantly steer and manage your throttle, but once they click the action is satisfying. It's a niche gem for anyone curious about mid-90s console hardware pushing into 3D, though its brief mission length and lack of any multiplayer mode keep it from being a must-own. Worth a few playthroughs if you enjoy classic space combat.

Section 2 - Getting Started:
When you first boot up Shadow Squadron, you'll see a title screen and a brief demo. Press Start to access the main menu, then select a mission. The game uses a simple mission-based structure - there are no difficulty settings aside from the mission order itself. Your first mission is an introduction to the controls.
Your primary goal in each level is to destroy all hostile targets. Use the D-Pad to pitch and yaw your ship. Press X (A button) to fire your main laser, and S (B button) to switch weapons or activate a secondary weapon (like homing missiles). Keep an eye on your shield bar at the bottom of the screen - if it empties, your ship explodes. You can restore shields by flying over pickup icons, and you can also collect weapon upgrades.
The radar in the lower-left corner shows nearby enemies as red dots. Lock onto a target by pointing your crosshair near it - you'll see a targeting reticle turn red when a lock is achieved. Then fire for better accuracy. Some enemies require multiple hits, and larger capital ships have weak points you need to hit. Manage your speed with the throttle (no dedicated controls mapped, but you can adjust speed by pressing Up/Down? Actually, in the original, the shoulder buttons controlled speed. With the emulator mapping, Q and E adjust speed: Q to slow down, E to speed up. Practice these controls first because drifting is common).
The game ends when you complete all missions in order, but there is no save feature - you must finish all missions in one sitting. If you crash, you restart the current mission with a fresh ship. Focus on dodging rather than tanking shots, because the shield recharge is slow.
