Baseball Stars (Japan, Europe) (En,Ja)
Baseball Stars (Japan, Europe) (En,Ja) on NGP
This is Baseball Stars for the Neo Geo Pocket, a portable baseball game from SNK. Released in Japan and Europe with both English and Japanese text, it brings arcade-style baseball to SNK's handheld. While the original Baseball Stars debuted on the NES in 1989, this version is an entirely different adaptation built for the Neo Geo Pocket's hardware, offering a compact but faithful take on America's pastime. If you are familiar with SNK's sports titles, you know they prioritize tight controls and fast action over simulation depth.
The player steps up to the plate to swing for hits, then switches to the mound to throw pitches with precision. Fielding is handled automatically in many situations, but you can manually control outfielders or relay throws when the ball is in play. The game features a league mode where you compete through a season, piling up wins to reach the playoffs. Alternately, you can jump into an exhibition match for a quick nine innings. The menus are straightforward, with options that are easy to navigate even without reading Japanese - the English text is present on the cartridge.
Today, Baseball Stars on Neo Geo Pocket stands as a solid example of how to shrink a sports game onto a handheld without losing the feel. It is not as deep as console counterparts, but the responsive controls and SNK's signature challenge make it worth a few rounds. If you enjoy retro sports titles and own an NGP or an emulator, this is a decent pick - just don't expect the complexity of later baseball sims. It is a simple, honest arcade baseball game that respects your time.
How to Play Baseball Stars (Japan, Europe) (En,Ja) Online
Getting Started
When you boot Baseball Stars, you will see a title screen with options like Exhibition, League, and Options. Press Enter to start, then use the D-Pad to highlight your choice and press X to confirm. If you want a quick game, pick Exhibition - you will be asked to select a team for you and for the CPU (or a second player if using a link cable). League mode lets you manage a season of games, tracking wins and losses.
The core loop is simple: you bat first or second depending on the coin flip. Time your swing by pressing X (A button) when the pitch crosses the plate. On defense, you control the pitcher - aim your pitch with the D-Pad and press X to throw. You can pick from different pitch types (fastball, curve, etc.) by holding a direction before pressing the button. Fielding is semi-automatic; the game will position your fielders, but you must press a button when the ball is near to catch or throw. Use the D-Pad to move the player icon near the ball, then press X to throw to a base (the game selects the target based on context).
One tip: do not swing at every pitch. Wait for a good one - pitches near the center of the strike zone are easier to hit. On defense, mix up your pitch locations and speeds to keep the batter guessing. If you are playing in League mode, you can also view standings and stats between games. The game does not have a deep strategy re: lineups, but you can swap out tired pitchers if needed. Overall, just relax and enjoy the arcade action - it is not meant to be a serious simulation.
