Final Zone II
Final Zone II on TG-CD
Final Zone II is a run and gun game that hit the TurboGrafx-CD in Japan on March 23, 1990, courtesy of developer Wolf Team and publisher Telenet Japan. It later made its way to North America later that year through NEC, released as a title for the TurboGrafx-CD add-on. As a direct sequel to the original Final Zone, it brought the same side-scrolling action but beefed up by the CD format's higher storage capacity, allowing for better music and voice samples. The genre is straightforward: run and gun, with no pretenses about being anything else.
You control a commando-style character who runs from left to right across each stage, firing a standard weapon at enemies and dodging their attacks. The game throws a variety of enemies and obstacles at you, and occasionally a bigger boss waits at the end of a level. Weapon pickups appear to upgrade your firepower, and you have a limited number of lives to reach the end. The core loop is simple: move, shoot, survive, and reach the goal. It is a linear experience with no branching paths or complex mechanics to worry about.
Final Zone II is a decent example of early CD-based run and gun games on NEC's hardware. It does not reinvent the wheel, but it offers a solid, if short, challenge that fans of Contra or similar titles may enjoy. The CD-quality soundtrack is a highlight, giving the action a cinematic feel that cartridge games of the era often lacked. It is a niche title worth checking out if you want to see how the genre transitioned to CD media, but it is not a hidden masterpiece. Play it for its historical place and the fun of a competent shooter.
How to Play Final Zone II Online
Getting Started: When you boot up Final Zone II, you are greeted by a title screen. If playing the Japanese original, menus and story text are in Japanese; the North American version is fully in English. Press Start to advance past the title and any introductory cutscenes. You will then choose to start a new game. The action begins immediately: your character appears on the left side of a scrolling stage, and from there you move right, shooting everything that moves.
The core gameplay is classic run and gun. Use the D-Pad to move, the A button to jump, and the B button to attack. Enemies come from the sides and sometimes from above or below. Weapon power-ups appear as floating icons - grab them to upgrade your gun. You have a set number of lives; losing all means a continue screen, but continues are limited. Learn enemy patterns and memorize stage layouts to survive. There is no map or inventory; just keep moving forward until you hit a boss. Defeat it to advance to the next stage. The goal is to reach and destroy the final boss to see the ending.
A few tips: your default gun is weak, so prioritize picking up power-ups early. Watch out for pits and instant-death hazards. The game is short, so do not be discouraged by deaths - you will see the ending after a few attempts. If you are playing the Japanese version, the menu text is minimal, so you can navigate by trial and error. The password or save feature is not present; it is a straightforward arcade-style experience meant to be completed in one sitting.
