City Hunter (Japan)
About City Hunter (Japan)
City Hunter is a Japanese-exclusive PC Engine (NEC Turbografx-16) game from the early 1990s, based on the popular manga and anime series of the same name. It was published by Sunsoft, a company known for licensing hit anime franchises into videogames. The game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up, a genre that dominated the era with titles like Double Dragon and Final Fight, but tailored to the city-based adventures of Ryo Saeba and his agency.
How to Play City Hunter (Japan) Online
Getting Started
City Hunter is a straightforward beat 'em up. You control Ryo Saeba as he moves through urban stages, fighting waves of enemies with punches, kicks, and special moves. The core loop involves making your way from left to right, clearing each screen of thugs before proceeding. Item pickups like weapons or health boosts appear on the ground. There's no complex story to follow - just fight through each level to reach the boss.
Since this is a Japanese-only title, the menus and on-screen text are entirely in Japanese. However, the game's interface is minimal: a title screen with a start option, a character select (Ryo is the only playable character), and then straight into the action. The HUD shows life bars and score, which are self-explanatory. If you know typical beat 'em up conventions from the era, you can jump in without needing to read anything. Use the attack button to fight, jump to avoid throws, and time your special attack (often performed by pressing attack and jump together) for tougher enemies.
