What is R-Type DX (Japan)?
R-Type DX is a Game Boy Color compilation that bundles the first two entries in the classic side-scrolling shooter series, R-Type and R-Type II. Released in 1999 exclusively in Japan, it takes the monochrome Game Boy originals and presents them in full color. The cartridge was published and developed by Irem, the same studio behind the arcade and console versions of the franchise. For fans of the series, this was a way to experience both games on the go with a visual upgrade.
Players control the iconic R-9 fighter ship through horizontally scrolling stages filled with alien enemies called Bydo. The core loop involves weaving through enemy fire, collecting power-ups that attach to the ship and modify its weapon loadout, and taking on massive end-of-level bosses. The game retains the deliberate, tactical pacing of its predecessors rather than pure speed. How to Play R-Type DX (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up R-Type DX, a title screen appears in Japanese. Press Start (Enter) to proceed. You will be shown a menu to choose between R-Type and R-Type II. The menu text is in Japanese, but the two options are clearly labeled with the game titles. Select your desired game by pressing A (X) on the correct entry.
The game begins immediately after selecting a title. Your ship appears at the left side of the screen, and enemies fly in from the right. Collect orange power-up capsules dropped by certain enemies to upgrade your weapon. Press B (S) to fire standard shots. You can detach the Force orb by pressing a button (usually B while holding the direction away from your ship) and reposition it to block enemy fire or attack in a different direction.
The game uses passwords to continue progress rather than saves. When you defeat a boss, a password is displayed. Write it down and enter it on the password screen to resume later. Keep an eye on your shield meter - losing it means instant death. The gameplay is deliberate and punishing, so learn enemy patterns and use the Force strategically.
