Gyruss (Japan)
What is Gyruss (Japan)?
Gyruss hit Japanese arcades in 1983, courtesy of Konami. This is the Famicom Disk System port from 1988, a later enhanced version that also saw a standard NES release in other regions. It's a tube shooter, meaning you fly through a tunnel in space, twisting and turning as enemies swarm in from all sides. Konami brought their arcade hit home with extra polish for the FDS hardware, including improved sound and visuals.
You pilot a small starfighter around the perimeter of the screen, shooting at waves of alien ships that fly in from the edges. The core loop is straightforward: survive each stage by blasting everything in sight while dodging return fire. Power-ups appear to upgrade your weapon, and clearing a zone triggers a warp tunnel sequence that acts as a short breather before the next wave. The game is relentless, with increasing speed and enemy density.
This FDS version is a solid pick for anyone who enjoys classic arcade shooters. It captures the frantic feel of the original Gyruss while adding a few convenience tweaks. The disk loading times are brief, and the music, a spacey adaptation of Bach's Toccata and Fugue, still sounds great. It's not a hidden gem - Gyruss is well known - but this Japanese FDS release offers a slightly different experience than the NES cart due to the FDS's sound chip.
How to Play Gyruss (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you boot the game, you'll see a title screen in Japanese. Press Enter to start. The game immediately throws you into the action: you control a ship that moves along a circular path around the screen. Use the D-pad to slide left or right around the perimeter. Press the B button (S key) to fire your main cannon. Your goal is to survive each wave of enemies and collect power-ups that drop from destroyed foes.
The core loop is simple: shoot everything that moves, dodge incoming bullets, and grab upgrades to increase your firepower. Each stage ends when you clear enough enemies, then you warp through a tunnel to the next zone. The difficulty ramps up quickly, so focus on positioning and timing your shots. Gyruss is a pure arcade experience - no save points, no continues (unless you use the emulator's save states).
Because this is the Japanese Famicom Disk System version, all menu text is in Japanese. However, the gameplay is entirely intuitive. The only on-screen text you'll see is the score, lives, and stage number. If you want to pause, press Enter. That's it - just survive as long as you can and aim for a high score.
