Chequered Flag (Japan)
Chequered Flag (Japan) on arcade
Chequered Flag originally hit shelves in 1983 as a ZX Spectrum title, making it the first driving game for that system and one of the earliest computer car simulators around. Developed by Psion Software and published by Sinclair Research, it arrived at a time when home computers were just starting to handle real-time racing. The version you see here under 'Arcade' is a ROM running through an emulator, not a native arcade board, but it faithfully reproduces the original experience.
How to Play Chequered Flag (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When the game loads, you'll likely see a title screen. Press Enter (Start) to begin. This is a racing simulation from 1983, so don't expect flashy menus. You control a car on a top-down track, aiming to complete laps as fast as possible. The car accelerates automatically or with a key press (often the up arrow), and you steer left and right.
The core loop is simple: race through the course, avoid going off-road, and cross the finish line. There's no story, just lap times and competition against an opponent or the clock. Because this is an early simulator, the handling might feel twitchy. Brake gently before corners using the down arrow if available. If the menus are in Japanese (as hinted by the title label), navigation is usually straightforward - the Start button advances screens.
New players should focus on mastering the track layout first. The game doesn't have a tutorial, so expect some trial and error. Once you get a feel for the car's grip, you can push for better lap times. It's a lean experience, but historically important as one of the first driving games on home computers.
