Getting Started

The core loop of Mr. Driller is simple and punishing. Your goal is to keep drilling straight down through stacks of colored blocks, avoiding getting squashed as the blocks fall from above. Blocks of the same color will stick together when they touch, and forming a chain of four or more makes them vanish, which buys you precious breathing room. Every moment you spend underground drains your air meter, and the deeper you go, the faster new blocks tumble in from the ceiling. Air capsules scattered around replenish your supply, so grabbing those is a priority.

Because this is a Japanese release, all menus and on-screen text are in Japanese. When you start, the first menu option usually leads straight into the game (often labeled with katakana for "Game Start"). After selecting it, you may see difficulty choices like "Beginner," "Normal," or "Expert" - pick with the D-Pad and confirm with the X button (A). During gameplay, use Arrow Keys for horizontal movement and press the S button (B) to drill the block directly beneath you. If you need to pause, hit Enter, and use V (Select) for any auxiliary menu navigation. The game saves high scores but not progress between sessions.

New players often struggle with timing the drill so that falling blocks don't land on their head. One reliable tactic is to clear blocks in vertical columns rather than spreading out, because that keeps the ceiling from dropping unevenly. Also, keep an ear out for the warning sound when your air goes red - that means you have seconds to find an air capsule before the run ends. Beyond the standard depth goal, survival is about managing chain reactions and not panicking when the screen starts filling up quickly.
