Puyo Puyo CD
Puyo Puyo CD on PCE-CD
Puyo Puyo CD is a puzzle game released for the NEC PC Engine CD in 1994, bringing the addictive Puyo Puyo formula to CD-ROM for the first time. Developed and published by Compile, this version takes the core competitive puzzle concept and gives it the CD treatment - enhanced audio, animated cutscenes, and a slight visual polish. It's a direct port of the original 1991 arcade and Mega Drive game, but tweaked to leverage the PC Engine CD's hardware. For fans outside Japan, it remains an import curiosity, as it never saw an official English release.
You play by controlling a pair of colored slime-like creatures called Puyos that fall from the top of the screen. Your job is to arrange them as they drop, grouping four or more of the same color together so they pop and vanish. When you clear Puyos, leftover ones above can fall and create chain reactions - chains are the key to victory. You compete against a CPU opponent (or another player with a second controller), and clearing chains sends garbage Puyos to their screen, clogging their playfield. The match ends when one player's screen fills up. The game follows the classic rules with a few minor interface changes specific to this CD version.
What makes Puyo Puyo CD worth revisiting today is its role as a solid, early home conversion of a genre-defining puzzler. The CD-quality soundtrack is a nice upgrade over the cartridge versions, and the cutscenes add a bit of personality. It's not a major revision - if you've played Puyo Puyo on any other system, you'll feel right at home. But for collectors of PC Engine CD software, it's a must-have that shows how Compile adapted their hit for a disc-based platform. The challenge remains steep, and the versus mode is as tense as ever. Just be prepared to navigate Japanese menus if you're emulating it.
How to Play Puyo Puyo CD Online
Getting Started
Puyo Puyo CD is a Japanese-only title, so the main menu and all in-game text are in Japanese. When you boot the game, the title screen appears - press Start (Enter) to proceed. You'll see a menu with options like single-player story mode (たいせん or ひとりで), versus mode (ふたりで), and options (せってい). The first option is usually the single-player mode, which pits you against a series of CPU opponents. Use the D-Pad to highlight an option, then press X (A button) to confirm.
Once in a game, the core loop is simple: Puyos fall in pairs. Rotate them with the D-Pad up or down, move left/right with the D-Pad, and hard-drop with Up (or let them fall naturally). The goal is to arrange four or more same-colored Puyos in a connected group - any shape works as long as they touch. When you clear them, any Puyos above drop down, potentially triggering chains. Chains send garbage Puyos (marked with a small face) to your opponent's field, filling it from the bottom. The match continues until one player's stack reaches the top.
New players should focus on building chains rather than just clearing single groups. Try to stack Puyos in a way that a single clear causes multiple pops in sequence. The game gives you a preview of the next pair on the right side of the screen. Pay attention to that to plan ahead. If you're playing against the CPU, early opponents are easy but later ones chain aggressively. Don't panic if garbage arrives - you can clear it by popping Puyos adjacent to it (it disappears when those groups clear). Practice chaining in the first few matches before taking on tougher foes.
