Legend of the River King GB is a fishing simulation game that originally arrived on the Game Boy Color in 1999. While the series started on the original Game Boy, this version brought color visuals and additional content. In Europe, it received a localized German release under the title you see here. The developer was Natsume, known for Harvest Moon, and they blended fishing with light RPG elements.
The player takes on the role of a young angler traveling to different fishing spots across a rural region. You cast your line, wait for a bite, and then engage in a timing-based minigame to reel in fish. Different lures and rods affect what you catch, and you can store your haul or sell it. There is also an overworld where you talk to locals, buy gear, and advance a simple story about becoming a master fisherman.
This game is a solid pick if you enjoy slow-paced, relaxing gameplay with a touch of progression. It doesn't try to be action-packed - expect to spend time watching a bobber. Compared to later fishing games on the GBC, it's one of the more polished efforts. The German version is identical to the English one except for the language, making it a simple way to play the game if you read German.
How to Play Legend of the River King GB (Germany) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, you will be placed in a small town. Walk around and talk to the characters to learn the basics. Your goal is to catch fish by traveling to different rivers and lakes on the overworld. Press X to open the menu and check your inventory, equipment, and fish collection.
To fish, approach a body of water and press X to cast your line. A bobber icon appears; when it dips underwater, press X again to set the hook. Then a gauge appears - press A or B in rhythm to reel the fish in without breaking the line. Different fish require different timing. Sell your catch to buy better rods and lures, which unlock new areas and larger fish.
The game has a day/night cycle and weather that affect fish behavior. Save your progress by talking to the old man in the town's cabin. The menus are in German, but they follow standard RPG conventions: the first option is usually Talk, second is Item, etc. Use trial and error to navigate if needed.
