You start the game in North Palace, where you talk to the king and get a brief introduction. The game uses a map screen to travel between towns, caves, and palaces. In towns, you can talk to villagers, learn spells, and heal. Most of the combat happens in side-scrolling areas where you fight monsters one-on-one. You gain experience points to level up your attack, magic, and life.
The game is entirely in Japanese, so menus and text can be a challenge. The main menu options are roughly: Continue (with password), Start New Game. During gameplay, press Start to bring up the menu. Use Select to switch between magic and item. The core loop is: explore the overworld, enter a dungeon or cave, fight through side-scrolling sections, and defeat the boss to advance. Save your progress by writing down the password shown on the Continue screen.
