Sentinel (USA) (Proto) is an unreleased prototype port of Geoff Crammond's classic 1986 puzzle game The Sentinel (released in the US as The Sentry). Originally appearing on the BBC Micro and later ported to many home computers, this Atari 7800 version was never officially finished or published. It's a rare glimpse at how the game might have played on Atari's late-80s console.
The object is to absorb energy from trees and rocks to climb the landscape and eventually replace the floating Sentinel at the highest point. You rotate the 3D view 90 degrees at a time, and must avoid being spotted by the Sentinel's sweeping gaze while carefully managing your energy supply. Each successful absorption boosts your power, but the Sentinel also absorbs energy from anything you leave behind, forcing you to keep moving forward.
If you enjoy methodical puzzle games with tense stealth elements, this prototype is worth a look. The original was praised for its solid-filled 3D graphics and challenging gameplay, and the Atari 7800 version retains that feel even in its unfinished state. Getting Started
When the game starts, you see a 3D landscape with a tall rotating tower at the center - that's the Sentinel you need to absorb. Use the Arrow Keys to rotate your view left or right, and look around to spot trees and rocks that you can absorb for energy. Press X to absorb an object when you are near it, which adds to your energy meter and raises your elevation slightly.
Your goal is to climb high enough to face the Sentinel directly and absorb it, but you must avoid being seen. The Sentinel rotates and scans the landscape; if its gaze lands on you, it will drain your energy. Use the B button (S) to temporarily hide or to cancel actions. Move strategically, absorbing just enough to stay ahead while keeping low to avoid detection.
As this is a prototype, some features may be incomplete or behave unexpectedly. Experiment with the controls and watch for the Sentinel's head movements - it always turns toward the highest absorbing object. Plan your route carefully because the landscape is a circular grid and you can only move forward or sideways relative to your current facing.
