Super Columns (Japan)
Getting to Know Super Columns (Japan)
Super Columns is a Japan-exclusive puzzle game for the Sega Game Gear, released sometime in the mid-1990s. Published by Sega itself, it adapts the gem-matching gameplay of the original Columns arcade and Genesis title into a portable format. There is no story or characters; it's a straightforward falling-block puzzle game, and it even saw a later re-release on the Coleco Sonic handheld.
The player controls a falling column of three colored jewels, rotating them to arrange matching sets. The goal is to line up three or more jewels of the same color either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Once a line is formed, those jewels disappear, and any jewels above them drop down. The game ends when the screen fills up to the top. It keeps the same simple, addictive loop as the original Columns, with the twist that columns can be rotated a full 360 degrees.
Today, Super Columns remains a solid time-killer for puzzle fans. It's not a landmark title, but it's a competent port that plays well on the Game Gear's smaller screen. For anyone who enjoys gem-matching games like Puyo Puyo or Tetris, this is worth a few rounds. Its later appearance on the Coleco Sonic also means it found a second audience among retro collectors.
