Nectaris (Japan)
About Nectaris (Japan)
Nectaris is a turn-based strategy game that first hit shelves in Japan in 1989. It was developed by Hudson Soft and released for the NEC PC Engine, which later saw a North American port under the name Military Madness on the TurboGrafx-16. This Japanese version keeps the original title and is a straight-up wargame: you command units on a hex grid, capture bases, and wipe out the enemy army. No real-time elements, no luck-based combat - just careful planning and resource management.
How to Play Nectaris (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Nectaris, the first screen is a title sequence. Press Start to move to a menu with options like Campaign, Vs. Mode, and Options. Because this is the Japanese release, all text is in Japanese. The campaign mode is the main draw: you select a mission from a linear set of scenarios. Each mission shows a brief overview, then you place your units on your half of the map.
The core loop is simple but deep. Each turn you move your units, attack adjacent enemies, and capture neutral or enemy bases to produce more units. Every unit type has strengths and weaknesses - tanks crush infantry but are vulnerable to artillery. You win by either destroying all enemy units or capturing their headquarters. There is no fog of war, so you can see the entire battlefield and plan accordingly.
New players should start with the first campaign mission. Take your time to learn the unit stats and movement ranges. If you get stuck, try focusing on capturing bases early to outproduce the AI. The game can be brutally hard, so do not be afraid to restart a mission with a different deployment.
