Moto Roader (Japan)
Inside Moto Roader (Japan)
Moto Roader is a top-down 2D racing game that hit the NEC TurboGrafx-16 (known as the PC Engine in Japan) exclusively in Japan. It belongs to the small but memorable subgenre of overhead-view racers that were popular in arcades and on home consoles during the late '80s and early '90s. While the developer is not widely documented in English sources, the game was published by Naxat Soft and later made available on the Wii Virtual Console.
In Moto Roader, you pick one of five cars and compete in a series of eight heats against four opponents, which can be human players or computer-controlled AI. The tracks are viewed from above, giving you a clear view of the road ahead and your rivals. After each race, you earn cash that you can spend on upgrades like better tires, engines, and handling - making each heat a little more manageable. The core loop is simple: race, earn money, upgrade, and try to finish at the top of the standings.
For retro racing fans, Moto Roader is a solid example of the top-down racing style that games like Super Sprint and RC Pro-Am made famous. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but the upgrade system adds a light strategic layer that keeps things interesting over the eight-heat championship. If you enjoy no-frills arcade racing with a bit of progression, this Japan-exclusive TurboGrafx-16 title is worth a look - especially if you're playing it through emulation or the Wii Shop release.
How to Play Moto Roader (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Moto Roader, you're first shown a title screen. Press Enter to start, then use the Arrow Keys to navigate the menu. Since the game is entirely in Japanese, you'll see text options for starting a race, selecting the number of players, and possibly adjusting settings. The top option is usually "Start Game," and pressing X confirms your choice. If you're playing with a friend, choose the two-player mode before the race begins.
Once you're in a race, the controls are straightforward. Use the Arrow Keys to steer your car left and right, and press X to accelerate. There's no brake button - just let off X to slow down. The goal is to finish each heat ahead of the other four racers. After each race, you'll enter a shop screen where you can spend your winnings on upgrades. Upgrade categories are shown as icons; experiment by selecting them with the D-Pad and pressing X. The game doesn't explain what each part does, but generally engine upgrades boost speed, tires improve grip, and suspension helps with cornering.
Your championship lasts eight heats. If you fall behind early, don't worry - you can catch up by choosing the right upgrades. The AI is fairly simple, so keeping a good racing line and avoiding collisions will usually put you in first. Just remember that if you hit another car too hard, you can spin out and lose positions. Play conservatively at first, then focus on speed upgrades once you're comfortable with the tracks.
